Vyuuham Sustainable harnesses BSF for efficient waste management!

Vyuuham

  • Are we the future saviours of earth
  • Are we disposing of our waste wisely
  • Can we make waste disposal lucrative
  • How can gated communities join the revolution of proper waste disposal
  • How can we dispose of organic waste without residues

Waste Management has been the main concern, globally. As per a report, ‘India generates 133760 MT of Solid Waste per day out of which 91152MT collected and 25884MT is treated’. ‘Out of total waste collected, only 12.45% waste is scientifically processed, and the rest is disposed of in open dumps (CPCB Report, 2013)’

Waste Management is extremely essential that needs immediate attention. As we live in a country with a large population that generates huge waste on a day-to-day basis. This waste if not disposed of properly will make life miserable in multiple ways.

Recently in a mentoring session, I stumbled upon this wonderful initiative, by Bangalore-based VYUUHAM SUSTAINABLE INDIA. The team designed waste disposal utilising The BLACK SOLDIER FLY (BSF), HERMETIA ILLUCENS, of the DIPTERAN family STRATIOMYIDAE. This divine fly is encountered in nature worldwide in tropical and subtropical areas. This is an easy source to breed and rear for the benefit of society.

The team expressed that globally this process of organic waste assimilation using BSF is prevalent but new in these parts. The process is effective and economical, in addition to yielding sustainable protein feed for animals and organic fertilizers for farming. This venture is a social enterprise creating revenues with quality by-products.

They have mastered a schematic layout for systematically collecting waste sourcing and segregation. Then the organic waste is treated by BSF and processed residue for animal feeds and organic fertilizers. The success of such ventures adds to the circular economy of the nation, helping society lead a healthy lifestyle.

However, proper waste management cannot be possible without collective efforts. Every home must segregate waste into three types of separation, organic waste is biodegradable. Then dry waste comprises of plastic, paper, metal or wood and hazardous waste like diapers, repellents, cleaning chemicals etc.

There is a separate ministry in the government that oversees waste management to ensure the prevention and control of pollution. We are discussing this issue as most important because the department has issued many rules for waste management. However, unless every individual takes a responsible role in proper waste disposal nothing can be achieved.

VYUUHAM SUSTAINABLE INDIA initiative is one of the best-needed ones because dumping waste into landfills is not a viable solution. As you reap what you sow, only proper treatment of waste is the need of the hour.

The most important that needs introspection is to properly segregate waste and treat them best through different processes like resource recovery and recycling. If neglected could result in air emissions, health impact, soil contamination, endanger marine species, odour and many more.
