One man’s fight against plastic gives birth to an innovative industry!

02032023 Coimbatore SPS KALYAN:

War on PLastics

  • Is plastic usage a menace in India
  • How much plastic is used in our country
  • Why Plastic is a problem
  • How are we faring across global users
  • What should be done to reduce the usage of plastic

These questions keep visiting our minds every time we purchase a commodity outside. Be it food or textiles, we ponder over the question of whether we are adding to the global problem. In spite of certain restrictions yet we are using plastic of better quality, yet the menace persists.

As per stats in 2021-22, the total amount of plastic used mounted to almost 15 Million Tons, of which nearly 6 million tons were polythene types. Doesn’t that ring alarm bells?

However one man started his fight against this once a boon, today a bane invention of mankind, PLASTICS. Since 18 years. S P KALYAN KUMAR from Coimbatore waged his war against plastics and started making ARECA PLATE MANUFACTURING MACHINE.

From this point he established the S P KALYAN MACHINE MANUFACTURING unit and today is into designing machines that produce tea and food containers. In spite of stiff competition from many renowned names, his machines are sought after by clients due to their efficiency and economics.

KALYAN was alone when he started off on this journey after being a school dropout. His father was a big supporter and was also into manufacturing. Joining his father’s business he started exploring differently and today established a workplace that only works to produce machines that look to a world without plastics.

Plastic waste has been a big menace in the country that consumes over 20.89 million tons of this bane material. The industry estimates claim that the usage could escalate to 22 Million tons this year.

A prominent report also suggests that of the 3.4 million tons of waste generated every year only 30% has been recycled. Though our standards against the global level are lesser, yet are alarming. Only in 2020, Maharashtra produced the largest quantity of plastic waste when compared to Sikkim, Lakshadweep and Tripura which were the least in the table.

Now KALYAN plans to manufacture alternatives to water bottles, toys and other products made out of plastics. He feels the war on plastics must be the responsibility of every individual to make this planet a better place for future generations.

Wisely Karnataka was the earliest to take a call in this regard. It was the first state to ban single-use plastic. And then others followed the process. Say no to plastics and join the war against this boon and bane material called PLASTICS.
